One of the highlights of Varuna is its connection to the Varuna Canal, which is part of the larger Krishnaraja Sagara Dam irrigation system. The canal’s shimmering waters not only nourish the surrounding fields but also add to the area’s scenic beauty. You can often spot locals engaged in farming activities, offering a glimpse into the traditional agrarian lifestyle of Karnataka. Varuna’s history goes way back in time. Ancient texts refer to it as Vaaruva, and it is believed that the place was developed by the Ganga dynasty. Varuna is also home to several temples that exude spiritual charm, the oldest of these being the Mahalingeshwara temple also known as Bhuteshwara temple. This temple dates back to the period of the Gangas and has beautiful sculptures of Mahishasuramardini and the Saptamatrikas. Another important temple in Varuna is the Mahadeshwara temple which has a magnificent bronze idol of Shiva. This temple was commissioned in 1828 by the queen Devarajammani, the wife of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. Varuna is particularly picturesque during monsoons when the rain transforms the entire region into a lush green paradise. For those who enjoy cycling or long drives, the road to Varuna from Mysuru is a delightful experience, lined with scenic views of paddy fields and coconut groves.

ವರುಣಾ ಕೆರೆಯು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಮಡಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸಕರ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ನೀಡುವ ಒಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ತಾಣ.  ಪ್ರಶಾಂತವಾದ ಭೂ ಸದೃಶ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಾಡಿನ ಮೋಡಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾದ ಈ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಧಾಮವು  ನಗರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನದಟ್ಟಣೆ, ಗೌಜು, ಗದ್ದಲದಿಂದ ದೂರವಿರಲು ಬಯಸುವ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಾಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುವವರಿಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಸುತ್ತುವರಿದಿರುವ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಂತಿಯುತ ವಾತಾವರಣದಿಂದ ವರುಣಾ ಕೆರೆಯು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಪ್ರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೆ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಬೃಹತ್  ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜಸಾಗರ ಅಣೆಕಟ್ಟಿನ ನೀರಾವರಿ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿರುವ ವರುಣಾ ಕಾಲುವೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಅದರ ಸಂಪರ್ಕವು ವರುಣಾ ಕೆರೆಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಲುವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿಯುವ ನೀರು ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹೊಲಗಳಿಗೆ ನೀರುಣಿಸುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ರುದ್ರ ರಮಣೀಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿದೆ. ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಕೃಷಿ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿರುವ ರೈತಾಪಿ ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಕೃಷಿ ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿಯ ಒಂದು ನೋಟವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ವರುಣಾ ಗ್ರಾಮವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳಲ್ಲಿ “ವಾರುವಾ” ಎಂದು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಗಂಗ ರಾಜವಂಶವು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಪಡಿಸಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ವರುಣಾ ಗ್ರಾಮವು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಗಳ ಹಲವಾರು ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೆ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಹಳೆಯದಾದ ಭೂತೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಮಹಾಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಸಹ ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಗಂಗರ ಕಾಲದಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರಮರ್ದಿನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಪ್ತಮಾತ್ರಿಕೆಯರ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಶಿಲ್ಪಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಶಿವನ ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ಕಂಚಿನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್ III ರವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ರಾಣಿ ದೇವರಾಜಮ್ಮಣ್ಣಿ ಅವರು 1828 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮಳೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡೀ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವಾಗಿ ಕಂಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವರುಣಾಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ರಸ್ತೆಯು ಸೈಕ್ಲಿಂಗ್/ಲಾಂಗ್ ಡ್ರೈವ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಆನಂದಿಸುವವರಿಗೆ ಭತ್ತದ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ತೆಂಗಿನ ತೋಟಗಳ ರಮಣೀಯ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳ ಆಹ್ಲಾದಕರ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂತೋಷಕರ ಅನುಭವ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.
