Devaraja Market, District: Mysuru

Devaraja Market has deep historical significance and continues to thrive to this day. Built in, 1886, it initially operated as a weekly market but is now open daily. Recognised as one of the oldest markets in Mysuru, it was constructed over the Diwan Poornayya Canal, which supplied drinking water to the Mysore Palace. In 1925, it was renamed as ‘Dodda Marukatte’ (Big Market) by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar. Initially a small bazaar, it grew under the patronage of the royals and the city’s thriving trade culture. By the early 20th century, it was formally established and named after Maharaja Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar. The market became an integral part of Mysore’s daily life, reflecting the city’s rich heritage through its traditional goods like spices, sandalwood, and flowers. Despite modernization, Devaraja Market remains a timeless symbol of Mysore’s cultural and economic legacy, attracting locals and tourists alike. The market’s architecture blends traditional and colonial influences. Its entrance features a grand clock tower, which not only serves as a timekeeper but also symbolizes the market’s historical importance. Inside, the corridors spread out like a maze, lined with attractive stalls offering a variety of goods. The market boasts vibrant colours, decorative pillars, and high ceilings, enhancing its architectural appeal.
