Sri Arkeshwara Swamy Temple, Taluk: K R Nagar, District: Mysuru

The Arakeshwara Temple is an important Hindu temple with a history that stretches back centuries. While the current temple complex, showcasing the typical Dravidian architectural style, dates to the early 19th-century rule of the Mysore Kingdom, its origins are believed to be much older. The temple was endowed by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, the ruler of the princely Mysore during British rule. However, the temple’s foundations are said to be traced back to the era of Kulottunga Chola I. Today, the Arakeshwara Temple is a protected monument under the Karnataka division of the Archaeological Survey of India, preserving its rich legacy and architectural grandeur. The Arakeshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Sun God and is located near the banks of the Kaveri River in Krishnarajanagara. The temple is part of a large complex with a massive Gopura, and a pillared Mantapa. There is a stone Shiva Linga and a metal image of Sadashiva. An idol of a seated Sun God or Suryanarayana can also be seen. Within the complex, there are two smaller temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, these shrines are known as Kalimadava and Chandikesvara. There is also a paved ghat with a Mantapa that leads to the river.

ಅರ್ಕೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶತಮಾನಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಹಿಂದೂ ದೇವಾಲಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ವಾಸ್ತುಶೈಲಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಮೈಸೂರು ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ 19ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆರಂಭದ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಮೂಲವು ತುಂಬಾ ಹಿಂದಿನದ್ದು ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ರಾಜರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಹಾರಾಜ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್ III ಅವರು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ್ದರು ಕೂಡ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅಡಿಪಾಯವನ್ನು ಕುಲೋತ್ತುಂಗ ಚೋಳ I ಯುಗಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿರುವುದಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರ್ಕೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಇಂದು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ ಸರ್ವೇಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿತ ಸ್ಮಾರಕವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದರ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ ವೈಭವವನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅಡಿಪಾಯವನ್ನು ಕುಲೋತ್ತುಂಗ ಚೋಳ I ಕಾಲದೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅರ್ಕೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಇಂದು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ ಸರ್ವೇಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿತ ಸ್ಮಾರಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದರ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ ವೈಭವವನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜನಗರದ ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯ ದಡದ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ಸೂರ್ಯ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಬೃಹತ್ ಗೋಪುರ ಮತ್ತು ಕಂಬದ ಮಂಟಪವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ ಮತ್ತು ಸದಾಶಿವನ ಲೋಹದ ಚಿತ್ರವಿದೆ. ಕುಳಿತಿರುವ ಸೂರ್ಯ ದೇವರು ಅಥವಾ ಸೂರ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಸಹ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣದೊಳಗೆ ಕಾಳಿಮಾದವ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂಡಿಕೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಸಣ್ಣ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ವಿಷ್ಣು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿವೆ.
