Beladakuppe Sri. Mahadeshwara Swamy Temple, Taluk: Sargur, District: Mysuru

The Sri Mahadeshwara Swamy Temple at Beladakuppe has roots in folklore, and tradition and is prevalent in social media too. It is believed that Sri. Mahadeshwaraswamy was born in Uttarpur, Uttar Pradesh, to Chandrashekarmurthy and Uttarajamma, as a disciple of Guru Vyarghananda, Sri. Mahadeshwaraswamy visited the monasteries of South India for the welfare of the world. Beladakuppe is one of the divine places which he visited. Located within the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, in the Hediyala area of Saragur taluk, this site dates back over 600 years to the 14th–15th century. Legend has it that Sri Mahadeshwara Swamy performed miracles and meditated in Beladakuppe, Beladakuppe is a small village in the middle of the hills surrounding the dense forest of Bandipur, within Ankupura. In this place, Sri Mahadeshwaraswamy meditated, wishing to settle here for the welfare of the local people and animals. He appeared in the dreams of the Shivasharana couple, Halagegowda and Ningamma and told them that the cows in their home would call out for milking. He also instructed them to identify the place and build a small shrine where the cow took them. Following this, Halagegowda and Ningamma Satyavanta Shivasharana traced the cow and identified the place, where they built the shrine as instructed. A linga was believed to have emerged at this spot, where a shrine was later built. Now, the temple is renovated, and 108 linga have been installed around it. The annual Karthika Masa Festival (Jatre), held on the last Monday of the Karthika month, attracts devotees in large numbers.

ಬೇಲದಕುಪ್ಪೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ. ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಜಾನಪದ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಬೇರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಉತ್ತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಉತ್ತರಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುವ್ಯಾರ್ಘನಂದ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ. ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರು, ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರಮೂರ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಉತ್ತರಾಜಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜನಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ. ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಲೋಕ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಮಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಲದಕುಪ್ಪೆ ಸಹ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸರಗೂರು ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಹೆಡಿಯಾಲ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಬಂಡೀಪುರ ಹುಲಿ ಅಭಯಾರಣ್ಯದೊಳಗೆ ಇರುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಸುಮಾರು 600 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೂ ಹಿಂದಿನದು. 14-15ನೇ ಶತಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎನ್ನಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದಂತಕಥೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಶ್ರೀ. ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಹಲವಾರು ಪವಾಡಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಬೇಲದ ಕುಪ್ಪೆಯು ಅಂಕುಪುರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ. ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಜನರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದರು. ಪುರಾಣದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಶಿವಶರಣ ದಂಪತಿಗಳಾದ ಹಲಗೇಗೌಡ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಂಗಮ್ಮ ಅವರ ಕನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರು ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹಸುಗಳು ಹಾಲು ಕೊಡುವ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸುವಂತೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದ ಮೇರೆಗೆ ಶಿವಶರಣ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ಲಿಂಗವು ಉದ್ಭವಿಸಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರು.

ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನವೀಕರಿಸಿ, ಸುತ್ತಲೂ 108 ಲಿಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಾರ್ತಿಕಮಾಸದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸೋಮವಾರದಂದು ನಡೆಯುವ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸ ಉತ್ಸವ ಅತ್ಯಧಿಕ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
