The BhimanakolliMahadeshwara Temple, nestled near the picturesque Kabini Reservoir, is a spiritual and scenic gem that captivates both devotees and travellers. The temple, originally submerged during the construction of the Kabini Dam, was later rebuilt with a modern architectural touch, preserving its historical significance. With a history believed to span over 800 years, the site is revered as the birthplace of Mahadeshwara Swamy. Halagappa, the first recorded priest, established a legacy now carried forward by his family for 11 generations. Today, Madappa’s sons, Siddamallappa and Madappa, continue the family tradition of priesthood. Local legends add to the temple’s mystique, with stories suggesting that the Pandavas passed through this forest during their exile, and Bheema’s nocturnal crossing of the area gave rise to its name, Bhimanakolli.
The temple hosts an annual festival in the month of Magha, drawing thousands of devotees. Additionally, special rituals are performed during Amavasya every month, making it a vibrant hub of spiritual activity and cultural significance.

ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕಬಿನಿ ಜಲಾಶಯದ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ಭೀಮನಕೊಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಭಕ್ತರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುವ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಂದರರಮಣೀಯ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಬಿನಿ ಅಣೆಕಟ್ಟು ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಲತಃ ಮುಳುಗಿದ್ದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಂತರ ಆಧುನಿಕ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪುನರ್ಜೀವನಗೊಳಿಸಿ, ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. 800 ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಕಾಲದ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಮಹದೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಜನ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಳವೆಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರ್ಚಕ ಹಲಗಪ್ಪ ರವರ ಕುಟುಂಬವು 11 ತಲೆಮಾರುಗಳಿಂದ ಪೂಜಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ದಂತಕಥೆಗಳು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿಗೂಢತೆಗೆ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಪಾಂಡವರು ತಮ್ಮ ವನವಾಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಾಡಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಾದು ಹೋದರು ಎಂದು ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಭೀಮನು ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಟಿದ ನಂತರ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಭೀಮನಕೊಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಾಘ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ಜಾತ್ರಾ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ತಿಂಗಳ ಅಮವಾಸ್ಯೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
