Chunchanakatte Falls, Taluk: Saligrama, District: Mysuru

The Chunchanakatte Falls is formed by the cascading Kaveri River jumping over a rocky terrain from a height of about 60 feet. The width of the cascade is approximately between 300 to 400 feet. The water is divided into two distinct streams as it falls, and then these reunite to flow as one into the Krishna Raja Sagara dam. The falls and its backdrop make for a very picturesque setting. It is believed that the falls are named after a local tribal chieftain named Chuncha, and his wife named Chunchi, who pleased Sri Rama with their hospitality when they visited the place during their exile. An ancient temple near the Chunchanakatte Falls is dedicated to Lord Rama, who is worshipped here as Kodanda Rama. The temple is associated with many legends and interesting facts. Inside the sanctum, the image of Sita can be seen to the right of Sri Rama, while the usual iconography is that of Sita to the left of Sri Rama. Legend has it that Sri Rama and Sita met a Rishi in the nearby forest during exile. Sri Ram was overwhelmed with the Rishi’s devotion and asked him what he wanted. The Rishi expressed a desire to see the couple with Sita to the right of Rama, which the divine couple obliged. The idols in the Kodandarama Temple commemorate this unusual request. Another incredible fact associated with the temple is that, inside the sanctum sanctorum, the noise of the waterfall cannot be heard, while its roar is deafening outside. Another legend associated with the temple and the Chunchanakatte Falls is that once Sita desired to have a bath, Shri Ram instructed Lakshman to hit an arrow at a rock. Immediately three streams of water erupted from the rock gearing three different shades, one was with turmeric, one with oil, and the other with shikakai. This is believed to have been the genesis of the Chunchunakateed Falls.

ಚುಂಚನಕಟ್ಟೆ ಜಲಪಾತವು ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯ ಸುಮಾರು 60 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದಿಂದ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಭೂಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಮೇಲೆ ಜಿಗಿಯುವ ಮೂಲಕ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಅದರ ಅಗಲವು ಸರಿಸುಮಾರು 300 ರಿಂದ 400 ಅಡಿಗಳಷ್ಟಿದೆ. ನೀರು ಬೀಳುವಾಗ ಎರಡು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಹೊಳೆಗಳಾಗಿ ವಿಂಗಡಣೆಯಾಗುತ್ತವೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಇವು ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜಸಾಗರ ಅಣೆಕಟ್ಟೆಯತ್ತ ಹರಿದು ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ಮತ್ತೆ ಒಂದಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಜಲಪಾತಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಸುತ್ತ-ಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ದೃಶ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಜಲಪಾತಕ್ಕೆ ಚುಂಚ ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಇಡಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನ ವನವಾಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಭೇಟಿ ಮಾಡಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಆತಿಥ್ಯದಿಂದ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನನ್ನು ಸಂತೋಷಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಚುಂಚನಕಟ್ಟೆ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಭಗವಾನ್ ರಾಮನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮನನ್ನು ಕೋದಂಡರಾಮ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಅನೇಕ ದಂತಕಥೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಆಸಕ್ತಿದಾಯಕ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದೆ. ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯ ಒಳಗೆ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನ ಬಲಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೀತೆಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿರುವುದು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿದೆ. ವನವಾಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಋಷಿ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ ಮತ್ತು ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮನ ಬಲಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ಋಷಿಯ ಬಯಕೆಯನ್ನು ದೈವಿಕ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ಸಾಕಾರಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು. ಕೋದಂಡರಾಮ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು ಈ ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಸಂಗತಿಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗದ ಸಂಗತಿಯೆಂದರೆ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಶಬ್ದವು ಕೇಳಿಸದಿರುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗದ ಸಂಗತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಸಹ ಜಲಪಾತದ ಘರ್ಜನೆಯು ಹೊರಗೆ ಭೋರ್ಗರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಿಶಿನ, ಒಂದು ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸೀಗೆಕಾಯಿಯ ಮೂಲವೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ.
