The Kapila River, also known as the Kabini River, holds significant spiritual and cultural importance, especially near Nanjanagud, a prominent pilgrimage town in Karnataka. Originating in the lush Western Ghats of Wayanad, Kerala, the river flows through Maanandavadi and Paanamrapula before merging with the Nugu River at Kaakanakote. Eventually, it joins the Gundlu River near Nanjangud, earning the town the title “Dakshina Kashi” due to its deep religious connections.Nanjangud is renowned for the Sri. Nanjundeshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple, situated on the banks of the Kapila River, is an important pilgrimage site and draws devotees seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The river is considered sacred, with its waters believed to possess purifying properties. Rituals like tarpanas, performed along its banks, are thought to bring spiritual elevation to one’s ancestors.

Legends enrich the significance of this region. It is said that sage Shivaratreeshvar meditated on a rock, now known as “Shivarathrishvara Bande,” in the middle of the Kapila River. Even during unexpected floods, the river is believed to have altered its flow to protect the sage’s penance. The site remains a centre for spiritual practice, hosting the grand Rathotsava (chariot festival) annually, which attracts thousands of devotees. The Kapila River not only sustains life but also preserves the spiritual and cultural heritage of Nanjanagud, making it a revered destination for pilgrims and travellers alike.

ಕಬಿನಿ ನದಿ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಕಪಿಲಾ ನದಿಯು, ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಸ್ಥಳ ನಂಜನಗೂಡಿನ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಕೇರಳದ ವಯನಾಡಿನ ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಘಟ್ಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಈ ನದಿಯು, ಮಾನಂದವಾಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾನಮ್ರಪುಲಾದ ಮೂಲಕ ಹರಿದು, ಕಾಕನಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನುಗು ನದಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿಲೀನಗೊಂಡು, ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಇದು ನಂಜನಗೂಡಿನ ಬಳಿಯ ಗುಂಡ್ಲು ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರ ಆಳವಾದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಪಟ್ಟಣಕ್ಕೆ “ದಕ್ಷಿಣಕಾಶಿ” ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದು ಲಭಿಸಿದೆ.

ನಂಜನಗೂಡು ಭಗವಂತ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾದ ಶ್ರೀ. ನಂಜುಂಡೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಪಿಲಾ ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಸಾಂತ್ವನವನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಪವಿತ್ರವೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ನೀರು ಶುದ್ಧೀಕರಣ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಸುವ ತರ್ಪಣಗಳಂತಹ ಆಚರಣೆಗಳು ಪೂರ್ವಜರಿಗೆ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಉನ್ನತಿಯನ್ನು ತರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದಂತಕಥೆಗಳ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟಗೊಳಿಸಿವೆ. ಕಪಿಲಾ ನದಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ “ಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿಶ್ವರಬಂಡೆ” ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಬಂಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಶಿವರಾತ್ರೀಶ್ವರ ಋಷಿ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಅನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಪ್ರವಾಹದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಋಷಿಯ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಭಂಗಪಡಿಸದೆ ನದಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಹರಿವನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸದ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದಿದೆ. ವಾರ್ಷಿಕವಾಗಿ ಭವ್ಯ ರಥೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು. ಆಗ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಂಜನಗೂಡಿನ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಯಾತ್ರಿಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೆ ಪವಿತ್ರ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ.
