According to legend, Arjuna stayed on this hill during the exile of the Pandavas and worshipped a carved idol of Shiva with the Mallika flower, and hence the temple deity is known as Mallikarjunaswamy. The temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the flowing Kaveri River. ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸುವ ಮುಡುಕುತೊರೆ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ನೆಲೆಗೊಂಡಿರುವ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಪವಿತ್ರ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮುಡುಕುತೊರೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಸ್ಥೂಲವಾಗಿ “ನದಿ ತಿರುಗುವ ಸ್ಥಳ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಬಳಿ ನದಿಯ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ವಕ್ರರೇಖೆಯನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೈಸರ್ಗಿಕ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಯಾತ್ರಿಕರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೆ ಸುಂದರ ರಮಣೀಯವಾದ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಭಗವಂತ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾಗಿರುವ, ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ದೇವತೆಯನ್ನು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂದು ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ದೈವಿಕ ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಸಂಕೇತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಡುಕುತೊರೆ ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗ ದರ್ಶನದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪೂಜ್ಯ ತೀರ್ಥಯಾತ್ರೆಗಳ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ 05 ಶಿವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳ ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆಯಬಹುದಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಾಂಡವರ ವನವಾಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾ ಹೂವಿನಿಂದ ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ಶಿವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹರಿಯುವ ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯ ವಿಹಂಗಮ ನೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಶಾಂತ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಇದು ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕತೆಗೆ ಪರಿಪೂರ್ಣ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಹಾಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿಯಂತಹ ಹಬ್ಬಗಳ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಭಕ್ತರು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗ ದರ್ಶನವು 12 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೊಮ್ಮೆ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಆಚರಣೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ದೂರದೂರುಗಳಿಂದ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಡುಕುತೊರೆಯ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಐದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಶಿವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಕ್ತಾಧಿಗಳು/ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರು ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿ, ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
