Bettadapura is a quaint town, a beautiful blend of nature, history, and spirituality. Rising 1,600 feet above the surrounding plains and standing at an impressive 4,350 feet above sea level, the town is home to a majestic forested hill crowned by an ancient stone temple, believed to have been built during the Chola era nearly a thousand years ago. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is accessible via a climb of over 3,108 steps, making the journey as awe-inspiring as the destination. The temple is famously known as Sidilu Manjunatheshwara, named after the Kannada word “Sidilu,” meaning lightning. According to local lore, when lightning strikes the hill, it enters the temple and circumambulates the deity, a phenomenon that has lent the temple its mystical name. During the vibrant Deepavali festival, the hill comes alive as hundreds of devotees from nearby villages gather to perform a unique ritual. Carrying traditional fire torches, they walk around the base of the hill before ascending to offer prayers to the deity. The path up the hill is interspersed with arches, and at the base can be found remains of ancient temples and other structures from the Chola and Vijayanagara periods. The trek to the top is through misty landscapes and promises a unique and enriching experience.

ಬೆಟ್ಟದಪುರವು ಒಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಪಟ್ಟಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ, ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕತೆಯ ಸುಂದರ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಭೂಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ 1,600 ಅಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ 4,350 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದಪುರವು ಪುರಾತನ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ದೇವಾಲಯದಿಂದ ಮಕುಟವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಭವ್ಯ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಬೆಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಸುಮಾರು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಚೋಳರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಭಗವಾನ್ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಸುಮಾರು 3,108 ಕ್ಕೂ ಅಧಿಕ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಏರುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಬಹುದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಹತ್ತುವುದು ಒಂದು ವಿಸ್ಮಯಕಾರಿ ಅನುಭವ ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಸಿಡಿಲು ಮಂಜುನಾಥೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಡಿಲು ಎಂದರೆ ಮಿಂಚಿನ ಆರ್ಭಟವಿರುವ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾನವಾಗಿ ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಬೆಳಕು. ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಶಿವನ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಹೆಸರು. ದಂತಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೊಮ್ಮೆ ಸಿಡಿಲು ಬಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸಿಡಿಲಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಅನೇಕ ಪುರಾಣಗಳಿವೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಶಿಡ್ಲುಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿದೆ. ನಂದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹನುಮಂತನ ಏಕಶಿಲೆಯ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ದಂತಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಮಿಂಚು ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಬಡಿದಾಗ ಅದು ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿ, ದೇವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಈ ಘಟನೆಯು ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅದರ ಅತೀಂದ್ರಿಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದೆ. ಹತ್ತಿರದ ನೂರಾರು ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಂದ ಭಕ್ತರು ವರ್ಣರಂಜಿತ ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಹಬ್ಬ ದೀಪಾವಳಿಯನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಪಂಜಿನ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಆಕರ್ಷಕವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಹಾದಿಯು ಕಮಾನುಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದು, ತಪ್ಪಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚೋಳ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಕಾಲದ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಕಟ್ಟಡಗಳ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಏರುವ ಚಾರಣವು ಮಂಜಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಭೂದೃಶ್ಯಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಅನನ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.
