Sri Jwalamukhi Tripurasundari Amma Temple, Taluk: Mysuru

The Jwalamukhi Tripura Sundari Temple in Mysuru is a must-visit destination for devotees. Mysuru is renowned for its beautiful temples and associated legends, the most famous being the Chamundeshwari Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, who slew the demon Mahishasura. However, Chamundeshwari Temple is not the only temple located in the Chamundi hill. Tripura Sundari is believed to have assisted Chamundeshwari in the final phase of her battle. She is known by many names in the region and has associated legends. Located at the foothills of Chamundi Hill, there stands a temple dedicated to Tripura Sundari, often considered as Chamundeshwari’s sister. Legend has it that when Mahishasura caused havoc in the three worlds, the Devas (Gods) sought the help of Shiva and Vishnu. Chamundeshwari who was created by combining both their powers, fought Mahishasura for many years. Mahishasura’s blood drops created new demons and to counter this Chamundeshwari Devi created Tripura Sundari, who extended her tongue to prevent the blood from reaching the ground, enabling Chamundeshwari to ultimately defeat Mahishasura. The idol of Tripura Sundari is made of five metals and is kept in the shrine. It is depicted with an extended tongue, resembling Goddess Kali. The temple also houses idols of Ganesha and Shiva, with Shiva’s idol adorned with a silver mask.

ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜ್ವಾಲಾಮುಖಿ ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ಅಮ್ಮನವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಭಕ್ತರು ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪುರಾಣದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಟ ಮಾಡುವ ಅಂತಿಮ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ಅಮ್ಮನವರು ದೇವಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ಅಮ್ಮನವರನ್ನು ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಂದ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಚಾಮುಂಡಿಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತಪ್ಪಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಗೊಂಡಿರುವ ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ದೇವಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾದ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ. ಭಕ್ತಾಧಿಗಳು ಈ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನು ಮೂರು ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿನಾಶವನ್ನುಂಟು ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ, ದೇವತೆಗಳು (ದೇವರುಗಳು) ಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಸಹಾಯವನ್ನು ಕೋರಿದರು ಎಂಬ ದಂತಕಥೆಯಿದೆ. ಎರಡೂ ಶಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಒಗ್ಗೂಡಿಸಿ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನ ರಕ್ತದ ಹನಿಗಳು ಹೊಸ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸಲು ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿಯು ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ಅಮ್ಮನವರನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಅಮ್ಮನವರು ರಾಕ್ಷಸನ ರಕ್ತ ನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀಳದಂತೆ ತನ್ನ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯನ್ನು ಚಾಚಿದರು. ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಯಿತೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ತ್ರಿಪುರಸುಂದರಿ ದೇವಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಪಂಚಲೋಹಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಇದು ಕಾಳಿದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಹೋಲುವ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಗಣೇಶ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕವಚದಿಂದ ಮುಖವಾಡವನ್ನು ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
