Sri Srikanteshwaraswamy Temple, Taluk: Nanjangudu, District: Mysuru

Nanjangudu, often referred to as the “Kashi of the South,” is an ancient temple town nestled on the banks of the Kapila River. This town is home to the famous Sri Srikanteshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This magnificent temple, with its intricate Dravidian-style architecture and sacred atmosphere, attracts devotees and travellers from across the country. Nanjangud has been a prominent centre of Shaivism for nearly a millennium. The Srikanteshwara temple is believed to have been originally constructed by the Western Ganga dynasty between the 9th and 10th centuries, with significant contributions and expansions made over time by the Hoysalas, Cholas, and Vijayanagara rulers. In more recent times the temple was patronized by the Wodeyar kings of Mysuru. The 120-foot-high gopuram that can be seen in front of the temple has been erected by Queen Devarajammanni, wife of Krishnaraja Wadiyar III. The Srikanteshwara Temple, also known as Nanjundeshwara Temple, finds mention in ancient texts like the Shiva Purana, where it is referred to as Sri Garalapuri. According to legend, it is here that Parashurama atoned for the sin of matricide or Matru Hatya. A temple dedicated to Parashurama is located near the Srikanteshwara Temple. The annual Dodda Jathre or Chariot Festival sees pilgrims flock here in hordes. Huge chariots carry the deities around the temple. Nanjangudu is not just about spirituality. its proximity to Mysuru makes it an ideal day-trip destination for those seeking tranquillity amidst history and nature. ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠೇಶ್ವರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯ, ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕು: ನಂಜನಗೂಡು, ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ: ಮೈಸೂರು

ನಂಜನಗೂಡು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ “ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಕಾಶಿ” ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಕಪಿಲಾ ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪಟ್ಟಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಣವು ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿತವಾದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಅದರ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣವಾದ ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ಶೈಲಿಯ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪ ಮತ್ತು ಪವಿತ್ರ ವಾತಾವರಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ದೇಶಾದ್ಯಂತದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಭಕ್ತರು/ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಂಜನಗೂಡು ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ಸಹಸ್ರಮಾನದಿಂದ ಶೈವ ಧರ್ಮದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಮೂಲತಃ 9 ಮತ್ತು 10 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ನಡುವೆ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಗಂಗಾ ರಾಜವಂಶಸ್ಥರಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರು, ಚೋಳರು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಅರಸರು ಕಾಲಾನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರಗೊಳಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಒಡೆಯರ್ ರಾಜರು ಪೋಷಿಸಿದರು. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ 120 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಗೋಪುರವನ್ನು ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್ III ರವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ರಾಣಿ ದೇವರಾಜಮ್ಮಣ್ಣಿ ರವು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ನಂಜುಂಡೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶಿವ ಪುರಾಣದಂತಹ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ಗರಲಪುರಿ ಎಂದು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದಂತಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಪರಶುರಾಮ ಮಾತೃ ಹತ್ಯೆಯ ಪಾಪಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಪರಶುರಾಮರಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾದ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶ್ರೀಕಂಠೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ವಾರ್ಷಿಕ ದೊಡ್ಡಜಾತ್ರೆ/ರಥೋತ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾತ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಅತೀ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಖ‍್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೃಹತ್ ರಥಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಉತ್ಸವ ಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ಮೂಲಕ ವಿಜೃಂಭಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಇದು ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಇದು ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ನಡುವೆ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವವರಿಗೆ ಸೂಕ್ತವಾದ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಪಿಲಾ ನದಿಯ ರಮಣೀಯ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸುತ್ತಲಿರುವ ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನ ವಾತಾವರಣವು ಈ ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿದೆ.
