St. Joseph’s Cathedral (St. Philomena’s Shrine), District: Mysuru

St.Philomena’s Church is an iconic landmark of Mysuru and one of the largest churches in India. The foundation for the church was laid in 1933 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. This majestic structure is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture, inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. and is dedicated to St. Philomena, a Catholic saint and martyr. The church’s twin spires, each rising to a height of 175 feet, dominate the Mysore skyline and can be seen from a distance. The facade, adorned with intricate carvings, showcases the grandeur of European-style design. Inside, the stained-glass windows depict key events from the life of Jesus Christ, including his birth, crucifixion, and resurrection. These windows, from France, add vibrant colours to the serene interiors. The altar houses the relics of St. Philomena, encased in a beautiful marble structure, these include a bone fragment and drapery. A statue of a reclining St Philomena can also be seen in the Church. The church is built in a cross-shaped floor plan, with high vaulted ceilings and an expansive nave that exudes a sense of peace and spirituality. St. Philomena was the daughter of the ruler of a small state in Greece. Her parents were childless, and on the advice of a doctor from Rome started practising Christianity. They were soon blessed with a daughter. They named her Philomena, or Filumena, “The daughter of light.”

ಸಂತ ಫಿಲೋಮಿನಾ ಚರ್ಚ್ ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಐಕಾನಿಕ್ ಹೆಗ್ಗುರುತಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ಭಾರತದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಚರ್ಚ್ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಫ್ರೆಂಚ್ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಗಳಿಂದ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದು, ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್ 1933 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶಂಕುಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ಕಟ್ಟಡವು ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಕಲೋನ್ ಕ್ಯಾಥೆಡ್ರಲ್‌ನಿಂದ ಪ್ರೇರಿತವಾದ ನವ-ಗೋಥಿಕ್ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಕ್ಯಾಥೋಲಿಕ್ ಸಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಹುತಾತ್ಮರಾದ ಸಂತ ಫಿಲೋಮಿನಾ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಚರ್ಚ್ ನ ಎರಡು ಗೋಪುರಗಳು ತಲಾ 175 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರವಿದ್ದು, ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಸ್ಕೈಲೈನ್ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ದೂರದಿಂದಲೂ ಸಹ  ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕಟ್ಟಡ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದು, ಐರೋಪ್ಯ ಶೈಲಿಯ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಳಗೆ ಬಣ್ಣದ ಗಾಜಿನ ಕಿಟಕಿಗಳು ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಜೀವನದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಘಟನೆಗಳಾದ ಅವರ ಜನನ, ಶಿಲುಬೆಗೇರಿಸುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ಕ್ಷಣಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಂಬಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಫಿಲೋಮಿನಾ ಅವರ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹ ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಚರ್ಚ್ ಅನ್ನು ಅಡ್ಡ-ಆಕಾರದ ನೆಲದ ಯೋಜನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಎತ್ತರದ ಕಮಾನು ಛಾವಣಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಿಶಾಲವಾದ ನವರಂಗ ಶಾಂತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮಿಕತೆಯ ಭಾವವನ್ನು ಹೊರಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೇಂಟ್ ಫಿಲೋಮಿನಾ ಗ್ರೀಸ್‌ನ ಸಣ್ಣ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರನ ಮಗಳು. ಅವರ ಪೋಷಕರು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಫಿಲೋಮಿನಾ ಅಥವಾ ಫಿಲುಮೆನಾ “ಬೆಳಕಿನ ಮಗಳು”ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಸಿದರು.
