Chamundi Hill, located 3 km southeast of Mysore Palace, rises to a height of 1,074 meters above sea level. When viewed from the Palace to the west, the hill is said to resemble the reclining demon Mahishasura, adding a mythical charm to its grandeur. Atop the hill lies the ancient Chamundeshwari Temple, originally known as Mahabala or Mahabaleshwara, which dates back to the Ganga dynasty. During the Hoysala era, additions such as a pillared mantapa and a gateway enriched the temple’s structure. The idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari in the sanctum is believed to have been created during this period. Chamundi, a fierce form of Parvati (Kali), became the royal family deity of Mysuru in the 16th century.

In the early 19th century, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III undertook significant renovations, including the construction of the iconic gateway tower (Gopura), which can be seen from miles away. Statues of the king and his queens grace the temple premises, preserving the legacy of the Wodeyar dynasty.A paved road, inaugurated in 1916, made the hilltop temple more accessible to devotees. Near the temple stands a striking 3.5-meter-tall statue of Mahishasura, depicted holding a serpent in one hand and a sword in the other, a constant reminder of the legend tied to the goddess’s victory over the demon.
