The Chikkagadiyara, or the Small Clock Tower, is a historical landmark right in the heart of the city. Standing near the bustling Devaraja Market, it holds immense significance as a reminder of Mysuru's rich and royal heritage and urban development under the Wodeyar dynasty. It was Built in the 19th century in honour of Lord Dufferin the then Viceroy of India, who had made an official visit to the Mysore Kingdom on the invitation of Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar. The clock tower which was named Dufferin Clock Tower in honour of the Viceroy, stands as an enduring symbol of the city's planning and architectural elegance. This charming structure is smaller than its counterpart, the Doddagadiyara (Big Clock Tower), but is equally captivating. The Chikkagadiyara is designed in an Indo-Saracenic style, combining traditional Indian and European architectural elements. Its square base is adorned with intricate carvings, while the tower tapers gracefully upward, culminating in a dome that houses the clock. The four-faced clock is functional to this day, keeping time for Mysuru's residents and visitors. Surrounding the tower is a well-maintained garden, which enhances its aesthetic appeal and offers a serene spot amidst the city's hustle and bustle. The Chikkagadiyara area is also a hub of activity, with vendors, shoppers, and tourists adding to its lively and colourful ambience. This clock tower is not just a timekeeper, it is a historical monument that reflects Mysuru’s legacy of blending tradition with modernity. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a casual visitor, the Chikkagadiyara opens a window into the cultural and architectural richness of Mysuru.
