Folklore Museum, District: Mysuru
The Mysore Folklore Museum stands out as a unique institution dedicated to preserving the vibrant folk traditions of Karnataka and beyond. Located within the University of Mysuru’s Manasagangotri campus. The Folklore Museum was established in 1968 with the vision of showcasing Karnataka’s traditional art, music, dance, and storytelling heritage. It serves as a treasure trove of folk culture, preserving ancient artefacts, costumes, masks, puppets, musical instruments, and ritualistic objects. The museum provides a deep insight into the lives, beliefs, and traditions of Karnataka’s indigenous communities.
The museum is a part of the Institute of Kannada Studies and is considered one of the most significant folklore museums in India. It not only preserves ancient traditions but also helps in reviving dying art forms by providing a platform for researchers and students. Housed in the Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, an architectural marvel built in the 19th century by the Wadiyar dynasty, the museum itself is a sight to behold. The Folklore Museum boasts an impressive collection of over 6,500 artefacts, carefully categorized into different sections that represent various aspects of Karnataka’s folklore.
One of the highlights of the museum is its extensive collection of traditional costumes used in folk performances like Yakshagana These elaborate outfits, adorned with intricate embroidery, vibrant colours, and striking headgear, showcase the artistic brilliance of Karnataka’s folk artists. The museum also houses an array of masks used in various traditional performances. These masks, made from wood, metal, and paper mache, represent different mythological characters and deities. They are an essential part of Karnataka’s folk theatre and storytelling traditions. The museum has an incredible collection of traditional musical instruments used by folk artists, including Tamburi, Dollu, Nagari, and Kombu.
Puppetry has been a popular storytelling medium in Karnataka for centuries. The museum displays an exquisite collection of wooden and leather puppets used in traditional shadow play performances like Togalu Gombeyaata. The museum showcases a wide range of ritualistic artefacts, including bronze figurines, terracotta idols, and ceremonial masks. These objects were used in folk religious practices, festivals, and village rituals. Some exhibits feature deities worshipped by tribal communities, providing insight into Karnataka’s diverse spiritual traditions.
Another fascinating section of the museum features folk paintings and scrolls that narrate epic tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and local legends. These artworks, created using natural dyes and traditional techniques, depict the artistic heritage of Karnataka’s rural communities. The Folklore Museum of Mysuru is truly a bridge between the past and the present, bringing the region’s rich cultural heritage alive for future generations.
