The Mudukutore Mallikarjuna Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna, is a serene and sacred destination perched on a hillock along the banks of the Cauvery River. The name Mudukutore roughly translates to "place where the river turns," referencing the river's distinctive curve near the temple. Steeped in history, spirituality, and natural beauty, this temple is an idyllic retreat for pilgrims and travellers alike. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple's presiding deity is worshipped as Mallikarjuna Swamy, symbolizing a divine connection with nature. Mudukutore is part of the Panchalinga Darshana, a revered pilgrimage circuit in Karnataka, which is a visit to 5 Shiva temples in the region. According to legends, the Pandavas visited this temple during their exile, leaving behind sacred imprints of their devotion. According to legend, Arjuna stayed on this hill during the exile of the Pandavas and worshipped a carved idol of Shiva with the Mallika flower, and hence the temple deity is known as Mallikarjunaswamy. The temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the flowing Kaveri River. The tranquil ambience and lush greenery make it a perfect spot for meditation and spiritual reflection. Devotees and visitors are drawn to the temple during festivals like Mahashivaratri. The Panchalinga Darshana is a sacred ritual observed once every 12 years, drawing devotees from far and wide. During this holy event, worshippers visit and offer prayers at five prominent Shiva temples in the region, including the revered Mudukutore Mallikarjuna Devasthanam. For nature lovers and spiritual seekers, Mudukutore Temple is not just a place of worship but a haven for finding peace amidst the chaos of daily life.
